The Chattanooga rapper’s follow-up to 2016’s The Sun’s Tirade is out July 30 via Top Dawg Entertainment and Warner Records.
The House Is Burning is Tennessee rapper Isaiah Rashad’s second studio album. This project is the follow-up to his debut album, The Sun’s Tirade. On October 24th, 2017, Isaiah previewed a track from the project in an Instagram Live video, initiating rumors of a new album. Almost two years later on June 21st, 2019, Isaiah revealed the title of the project in an Instagram Live stream. After a year and a half of Isaiah teasing new material on various social media posts and livestream sessions, on April 28, 2021, TDE posted a cryptic announcement revealing that something from the label was going to be coming on May 7, 2021.
He talked candidly to The Fader about his drug addiction and spending habits that sent him on a downward spiral, but revealed he was doing much better. He also announced his next album, The House Is Burning. The original release was slated to be in June, but it ended up getting pushed back another month. Fans were disappointed, but another month was nothing when they had already been waiting years. Now, the album is finally out worldwide and it’s sounding pretty good.
The release was confirmed to be the album’s lead single “Lay Wit Ya” when the label posted a YouTube premiere that featured a copyright claim for the track in its description. The next week on May 6, 2021, his FADER cover story “After the Fire” revealed that The House is Burning was slated for a June 2021 release. It also confirmed that many snippets that Rashad had teased had made the album and that the track listing had a 20 song duration.
Musically, Weiss notes that the project evokes similarities to Dilla’s work, revealing that the album’s opening track is titled “Darkseid.” It’s also confirmed that Kenny Beats, who Rashad fondly credits as his “rap coach,” is contributing two beats to the project. As the piece reveals, Rashad compiled the final tracklist from a vault of sixty tracks, noting that many of his personal favorites were ultimately cut from the “up-tempo” project.
“For new people, if they hadn’t heard me before, I’d like them to walk away and be like, ‘Damn, he’s good at making a lot of different stuff,” Rashad told GQ. “If you’ve been a part of this sh*t, I’d want you to be like, ‘Damn, he gave me a good update on his life and he’s still giving me stuff that’s going to help me during my day when I’m going through my own sh*t.'” Features on the record include looks from Lil Uzi Vert, Duke Deuce, Smino, Amindi, Jay Rock, Jay Worthy, Kal Banx, Doechii, YGTUT, SZA, and 6LACK.
